EASTER DUTIES

Mass attendance

As it is not possible for the faithful to receive Holy Communion at this time, and into the future,

the Bishops of England and Wales have dispensed the Easter Duties for the year 2020. The

obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days is removed during these emergency

circumstances of the lockdown, and for as long as they last. The current pandemic is the serious reason why this obligation does not apply at this time. Bishop Patrick urges all of us, clergy, religious and laity to develop ways in which we can renew and deepen still more our spiritual relationship with God.

Confession

A recent note from the Congregation for Sacred Worship, speaking about the pandemic, reminds the faithful who cannot receive sacramental absolution, that ‘perfect contrition, rooted in love of God who is to be loved above all things, expressed in a sincere request for forgiveness, insofar as the penitent is able to make it at that moment, and accompanied by the firm intention to go to confession as soon as is possible, obtains forgiveness of all sins, including grave sin (cf. Catechism of the Catholic Church 1452).

ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION PRAYER

Offered as an example of a suitable prayer for use by home viewers wishing to participate in a Live Streaming of the Mass

After the celebrant has received Holy Communion himself, and in place of communicating the

faithful, the celebrant reads aloud the Act of Spiritual Communion, and invites the home viewers to say the words of the prayer with him.

'My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You.

Amen.'
